Maria Baker and Luke Degnan
Artists' book (44 pages)
A pile of cardstock timecards became our inspiration for several
projects during the residency. They illustrated the break we
experienced from our more regimented work-lives (in the sense of job)
and posed questions about how we experience the connection between
work and nature. What are symbols of and feelings about our work and
how are they interrupted and redefined by our being at the Swimming
Hole? What did we not know we were missing? What were the symbols of
work and how did their meaning change when inserted into a lush
landscape?
Workbook became a ringbound deck of business card-sized pages that
traces a path away from the narrow focus of work. As we assembled the
book, it began to map the story of an escape. In the process, we
re/learned to look up and out.
Every member of the group contributed individual cards/pages which
made the physicality of the book more expansive.
